Via Feratta
Not getting enough adrenaline? then try Via Ferrata. Via Ferrata gives acces to cliffs, mountains and gorges and other places that would otherwise be the preserve of the experienced rock climber.
Via Ferrata literally translates to Iron ways, so called because iron handrails, wire ropes and ladders are placed along cliffs along with fox wires and bridges. They allow walkers of modest ability the chance to experience a big mountain environment, but are not suitable for those without a good head for heights. Be warned!
These paths were originally constructed by soldiers during the 1914-1918 conflicts for acces to front lines over the mountains and to the many forts dotted along the Italian mountains.. Later, these protected routes and even tunnels through the mountains were used to great effect and enjoyment by mountaineers. The idea caught on and the number of ferratas grew steadily. There are now literally dozens spread throughout the regions and their popularity has led to their appearance in both France and Switzerland.
Routes vary from a couple of hours to a full day and are carried out in La Brigue or Peille on the French side of the valley. Prices start from only €15 Euro depending on group size and the duration of the activity. Equipment can also be hired from the organisers.
